After discussions with my tame boat builder we've been able to come up with some educated guesses on initial costs to build the hull only from foam/fibreglass.
Epoxy (glue #1) - 100kg @ $20/kg-------------------------------------$2000
Fiberglass lots and lots -----------------------------------------------------$1000
Undercoat 5lt ---------------------------------------------------------- ----- $200
Core Cell approximately 10 sheets of 2400x1200 @ $150/sheet------- $1500
(Core Cell are 'foam' sheets that are the 'structure' in-between the fiberglass layers)
TOTAL APPROXIMATE HULL BUILD COST $4700
ply hull would be approximately $1000 cheaper
Hull fittings ( pulleys etc) $1500 (Headsail furler $480 new, Spinnaker furler $500 new)
Ropes/sheets/lines $500 (new)
Mast $100 (25+ years old but very strong)
Mast standing rigging $500 (new wire and fitting - home swaged/friends hydraulic press)
Keel lead bulb $500 (home pored lead)
Spinnaker Pole $150 (used aluminium mast section to be used)
Sails $1500 (home made-$500 sewing machine, $1000 worth of material)
Trailer $500 (used frame, new wheels and axle)
engine $1000 (new price, may be able to acquire good second hand for less)
safety equipment $500 (radio, flares, medical kit, water, anchor, paddle, bucket, etc)
Approximate cost $6750 (using as many second hand parts as possible to scavenge)
In the water approximate cost (all new boat except for 2nd hand mast) $10 450
- i550 Shazza cost approximately $9 000 in the water for her first race and cost a further $3000+ to get right up to racing her best.
- Shaw 650 & Leech 650 sportsboats cost upwards of $30 000
